Richmond, VA – Governor Abigail Spanberger just made reproductive health history by signing legislation into law in front of an audience of legislators and reproductive rights advocates. The legislation authorizes the exact language for the ballot question that will appear before voters in November, summarizing the Constitutional Amendment for Reproductive Freedom.
The proposed amendment codifies the right for Virginians to access a spectrum of reproductive healthcare including prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, birth control, abortion, miscarriage management, and fertility care.
“After a two-year process moving the amendment through the General Assembly, we are ecstatic to see the Constitutional Amendment for Reproductive Freedom is finally making it to Virginia voters this fall,” said Tarina Keene, executive director of REPRO Rising Virginia. “The language approved by the General Assembly describing the amendment is clear, concise, and accurately outlines the three main clauses of the proposed constitutional amendment. Voters have been waiting for this opportunity and the decision to enshrine reproductive rights into the state constitution will soon be in their hands. We are confident that the people of Virginian will overwhelmingly say yes!”
Ballot question that voters will decide on in November –
Question: Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to (i) protect the freedom to make personal decisions about prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, birth control, abortion, miscarriage management, and fertility care; (ii) protect doctors, nurses, and patients from being punished for these decisions; and (iii) allow for restrictions on access to abortion during the third trimester of pregnancy except when the patient’s health is at risk or the pregnancy cannot survive?
