REPRO Rising Virginia Celebrates Key Senate Victory for
Constitutional Amendment for Reproductive Freedom
RICHMOND, VA — Today marks a milestone in the fight for reproductive rights in Virginia as the state Senate voted to pass HJ 1, the Constitutional Amendment for Reproductive Freedom. This brings the Commonwealth one step closer to ensuring that Virginians—not politicians—have the final say over their reproductive healthcare decisions.
Tarina Keene, Executive Director of REPRO Rising Virginia, issued the following statement:
“Today’s Senate vote is a monumental victory for reproductive freedom in Virginia. With this passage, we are now one major step closer to placing this critical amendment on the ballot which will allow voters to decide if their reproductive rights should be forever enshrined in the Virginia Constitution. This victory is the result of the tireless advocacy from reproductive freedom advocates, legislative champions, and reproductive rights supporters and activists from across the Commonwealth who refuse to back down in the fight to protect our bodily autonomy.”
There is one more step in this first year of a two-year process to get the constitutional amendment on the ballot. SJ247, the Senate companion bill to HJ1, will be heard in the House of Delegates next month.
