Alexandria, VA – In history making victories for the Commonwealth, REPRO Rising Virginia congratulates reproductive freedom champions Representative Abigail Spanberger, Senator Ghazala Hashmi, and Delegate Jay Jones for their momentous and undeniable victories on Election Day.
Spanberger is the first woman to be elected Governor in the Commonwealth’s more than 400-year history. Lt. Governor-elect Hashmi is the first Indian and Muslim woman to be elected to statewide office in the country, and former delegate Jones is the first Black man to be elected Attorney General in Virginia.
They will be joined by a new group of fierce champions for abortion rights in the House of Delegates. The Democrats secured a solid majority that will ensure enough likely votes to pass the Constitutional Amendment for Reproductive Freedom in the 2026 General Assembly session and send it on to the voters.
“Virginia voters sent a resounding message – the freedom to make decisions about their families and access to abortion are critical, valued freedoms that impact their daily lives and they will vote for candidates that will stand up for these fundamental rights. Virginians’ are sending a trifecta of reproductive freedom leaders to Richmond who won’t back down from a fight,” said Tarina Keene, Executive Director of REPRO Rising Virginia.
This was a hard-fought fight up and down the ticket, and REPRO Rising Virginia was proud to invest in multiple House races to build a solid reproductive freedom majority in the House of Delegates. This majority paves the way for Virginians to decide if they want to enshrine their reproductive rights and freedoms in the state Constitution in 2026. We have no doubt that they will.”
“Through our robust field campaign and deep canvass program talking to Virginians in every corner of the Commonwealth, it is clear that access to the full spectrum of reproductive healthcare including birth control, abortion, IVF, pre-natal care, and miscarriage management is a priority regardless of where you live.
This election ensures we will continue to move forward on the Constitutional Amendment for Reproductive Freedom so we can send it to the voters for final approval next year. Once the amendment has passed, Virginians will no longer have to worry that their most basic healthcare needs will be subject to the whims of extremists and politicians.”
This election was not just a referendum on the Trump presidency and the economy – it was a cry for bodily autonomy and access to healthcare for all Virginians.
REPRO Rising Virginia made a six-figure investment into the election cycle with a robust field and canvass campaign across the Commonwealth which included embedding four organizers in four House races, volunteer mobilization for weekend action days, text banks, digital ads, and direct candidate contributions.
