Three Years After Dobbs, REPRO Rising Virginia Presses the Fight for Reproductive Freedom Forward

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Three years ago today, the United States Supreme Court made the devastating and unconscionable decision to strip Americans of their right to abortion. This was the first time in our nation’s history that rights have been taken away from Americans. Since that unfortunate day, a crisis has developed in the country. Abortion bans and restrictions have spread like wildfire throughout the country, resulting in a deepening of racial and economic injustices in our healthcare system.

This crisis isn’t metaphorical. It’s not a dramatization. It’s lived, and it’s brutal.

We have seen the heartbreaking refusal to treat pregnant people who are seeking lifesaving miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy care. In states that have banned abortion, pregnant people are being forced to wait in agony as doctors consult with their lawyers to determine if they can provide care.

Many of them have died waiting. And these are not isolated events. These are the results of deliberate, callous actions and policies created by state legislators. Polices that only cause pain and suffering to pregnant people in crisis.

Abortion remains legal and accessible in the Commonwealth, and pregnant people are traveling across multiple state lines seeking the care they need. In the past year, we’ve had a 16% increase in patients crossing our borders for care. That’s 1 in 4 patients coming from out of state. It is a tragedy that people cannot receive abortion care in their own communities and in our democratic society have been stripped of their bodily autonomy based on their zip code.

This is a staggering cruelty being carried out in plain sight.

However, here in Viriginia, we can hold the line. And that’s exactly what we are fighting to do. We are dedicated to amending Virginia’s constitution and protecting abortion in Virginia for good by passing the Constitutional Amendment for Reproductive Freedom. While this process is long, this is our opportunity to make sure no one in Virginia can be denied the ability to make decisions about their own body and future and receive the care they need.

As always, we are rising to meet this moment. We mourn, we gather in love, and we are in endless pursuit of a Commonwealth with true reproductive freedom. We are still here. And the work is not done. Our fight continues, and the next stop is the ballot box this November. We will meet you there.
